I’m McKay, and I was born and raised active member of the LDS church in Southern Idaho’s beautiful Magic Valley. I am inspired by my pioneer ancestors who were unafraid to stand up for what they believed in: to trek across oceans and plains to exercise convictions that resisted cultural norms. I am a gay Mormon who has spent my entire life confronting the painful ways in which gender politics operate in the lives of marginalized church members, and I finally feel the courage to say so. I believe that governing bodies of any institution have a duty to represent as many perspectives and viewpoints as possible, and that to continue barring women from decision-making positions in the church is to ignore some of the most important and dismissed voices among us. The opposite of motherhood is not priesthood; it’s fatherhood. My Y chromosome does not make me more worthy of any of God’s gifts. I believe women should be ordained.
