Russel M. Nelson stated in the October 2013 General Conference:
“A pivotal spiritual attribute is that of self-mastery–the strength to place reason over appetite. Self-mastery builds a strong conscience. And your conscience determines your moral responses in difficult, tempting, and trying situations. ”
In striving for self-mastery, I try to honestly answer this question for myself: Are my actions motivated by the divinity within me? Am I driven by love, generosity, integrity, charity, humility, courage, gratitude, empathy or fear, hunger, laziness, pride, competition, selfishness, anger, vanity?
When it comes to my decision about whether or not to support the Ordain Women movement privately, publicly, or not at all, I came to my decision by asking myself that question. The result is my publicly saying from a place of love, gratitude and courage that I believe women should be ordained.
